Dzhuliyan (Jay) Vasilev, a sophomore medical student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, AZ Campus, received the 2021 fall semester medicine and health scholarship from the SignatureCare Emergency Center.
The $ 1,000 scholarship, awarded twice a year to an American student who demonstrates a deep commitment and passion for the health field, aims to help the student cover tuition, costs, books and other education-related expenses.
On accepting the scholarship, Dzhuliyan (Jay) Vasilev thanked SignatureCare Emergency Center for the price, adding that it will allow him to focus more on his studies instead of worrying about financial loans and debt.
âI am grateful for this SignatureCare Emergency Center scholarship opportunity. It really allows me to take the stress out of the financial loans and debt that we take on as medical students and to focus a little more on my studies, âhe said.
âI am extremely passionate about medical education and the field of medicine, as well as teaching and volunteering. This scholarship will help me to continue these efforts, âVasilev added.
He said the loss of his grandparents to cancer in Bulgaria while in high school in the United States motivated him to work to find cures for diseases like cancer and to help improve health care in developing countries.
âIn high school, several health crises occurred which began to transform my perspective on medicine. In less than six months, two of my grandparents died, one at 58 from cancer of the trachea and the other at 60 from cancer of the uterus. 6000 miles away and desperately unable to offer medical support, I was devastated.
âI knew that if my grandparents had lived in an area with access to state-of-the-art health care, their illnesses would have been diagnosed earlier, monitored more closely and treated more effectively. A desire began to grow in me: to work to find cures for diseases like cancer, to help improve healthcare in developing countries, and to strive to never again feel this level of helplessness in the face of a disease. serious illness, âhe added.
Rhonda Abbe, Director of Operations at SignatureCare Emergency Center, congratulated Vasilev on the scholarship, adding that she expected great things from him in the future.
âDzhuliyan (Jay) Vasilev is passionate about medicine and healthcare. It is so obvious and I congratulate him on being chosen for this scholarship. He deserves it. I expect great things from him in the future, âshe said.
